Practical color tool

Dark Mode Color Palette Generator

Create dark mode palettes with readable foregrounds, muted surfaces, borders and accessible accent colors.

What this page gives you

  • Use deep neutral shades for backgrounds and softer tints for borders.
  • Avoid pure black when surfaces need hierarchy and separation.
  • Check accent contrast against both dark surfaces and light text.

Good for

  • Dark dashboards
  • Developer tools
  • SaaS apps
Can I use this with the main generator?

Yes. Start from this page, then open the main Chromoforge tool with the same base color and export the palette.

Can I just invert my light palette?

No. A straight inversion produces oversaturated surfaces and glaring accents. Dark themes need desaturated near-black surfaces around #121212 to #1A1A1A, brand hues lifted in lightness and lowered in chroma, and elevation expressed through slightly lighter surfaces rather than shadows.

Should dark mode text be pure white?

No. Pure white on pure black maximises the ratio but causes halation, where glyph edges appear to bleed. Around 87% white on a near-black surface, roughly #E6E6E6 on #141414, still clears 4.5:1 comfortably and is far easier to read for long sessions.
